Cloves are flower buds of a specific myrtle tree and were one of the earliest traded spices. Its natural sweetness pairs well with cinnamon and nutmeg, and the oldest evidence of its trade came from Sri Lanka about 1500 years ago. Humans have highly valued this spice since before Roman and Medieval times.
